One story in +10 languages

The Persian New Year coincided this year with our home quarantine. All the rituals of our New Year that we call Nowruz and is traditionally accompanied with 12 days of feasts, family parties, hugging, kissing and giving and receiving souvenirs and gifts and on the 13th, the Nature’s Day when people leave their homes to parks and gardens to spend all day long to pass the curse of the day.

Now think of a situation where we must sit at home to pass the curse of the virus.

Everybody while in quarantine does some new work and together with Ghazaleh, my daughter, we sat and worked on a book to give to children as the new year’s souvenir. I had the idea since the early days of Covid-19 pandemic.

During this time some of the works by Chinese and American authors were translated and published. They were useful books but for me, the social aspects of the event and its effect on our lives and tolerating the situation was more important than how to tackle and get rid of the virus.

Our book starts with a video chat, where the children are sitting together and are talking to their uncle on video chat platforms, and it ends with a picture of this group separated in frames.

The book, small as it is, is the result of a great teamwork. On the days when everybody was at home and neither it is possible to do technical work nor you can find artist, the great generosity and compassion of our friends accompanied and finished the work.

To make the book medically informed, I asked the Dr. Hossein Kermanpour the director of Sina Hospital Emergency Room who was personally engaged with the Covid-19 for two weeks. He has recently recovered and kindly devoted his time, enriching the book with his medical experiences and advices.

While finalizing the illustrations, I introduced it on some social media, reporting on the work Ghazaleh and me have done and asked if there are any volunteers to hand us on graphics and translations. Mrs. Elahe Javanmard helpfully volunteered for artistic and graphic management of the work and some friends accepted to translate it in a variety of languages including English, Italian, and French by the kind efforts of Farshid Sadatsharifi, Sara Louise Anderson, and Shbnam Kasraei.

The book in different versions is available for download at my personal website at http://aliseidabadi.ir.

We invite more translators to reproduce the work in more languages. A high-quality version of the graphics is available for further productions upon request. Please help the book to reach more children on the earth as this is the result of a global and universal experience.
